3 Tips for Storing Seasonal Decor

Have you been battling your storage area in search of space for all the Christmas decorations? Shuffling boxes to get to what you need? Sifting through decorative pieces to find the ones you actually use? Here are my tips for simplifying seasonal decor storage.

1. Purge + Declutter

As you’re decorating for each season, be mindful of the items you are choosing to not use. If you didn’t use an item this year, what are the chances you’ll want to use it next year, or the year after that? Have you purchased or received new decor items that can replace the old? If something is broken, is it worth it to you to fix it? Maybe you have family heirlooms that just don’t match your style, consider if there’s another relative who would put them on display. Perhaps you’re holding onto items for sentimental reasons. If you have no intention of decorating with those items, a keepsake box would be a more appropriate storage solution.

2. Contain

Once you’ve purged unwanted items, you’ll have a good idea of just how much you have left to contain. I recommend using heavy duty bins that are uniform in size and stack neatly. That means getting rid of the mismatched boxes. Be sure to measure any shelving you plan to use and get bins that will best fit your space.

For Christmas decor, use extra long bins that are capable of holding artificial trees and greenery, but keep ALL decor items in the same size and style of bin. This ensures everything can be neatly stacked, you’ll more easily be able to see everything you have, and your storage area will have a uniform look. For smaller decor pieces, use smaller bins, boxes, or dividers within the larger containers to keep things neat. Try to group decor pieces by the location they are displayed to simplify decorating room by room.

For the seasons with far less decorative pieces to store, opt for smaller bins, but again, bins that are uniform in shape and size. Depending on your amount of seasonal decor, you may combine a couple ‘seasons’ into one storage container—I’m looking at you Fall/Halloween bin.

3. Label

For most seasonal decor bins, labeling the bin with the corresponding season is likely sufficient. For Christmas decor, be a little more descriptive to assure it’s easy to locate the items you’re looking for. You may want to hang the outdoor garland before you’re ready to put up the stockings, and I’m guessing you’d rather save the effort of opening each ‘Christmas’ bin.
